Denmark is a very safe choice for overseas students, as it has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. International students can access free medical treatment in Denmark thanks to the Danish welfare system.

Health insurance and a CPR number

If you stay in Denmark for more than three months, you can apply for a social security number (a CPR number), which allows you to access the Danish National Health Service and receive free medical treatment in clinics and hospitals.

After receiving your residence permit, you must register with the citizen service office in your local municipality in Denmark. Please remember to bring your passport, residency permit papers, and rental agreement. The International Office can help you find your local government. Your yellow health insurance card with your social security number will arrive in 3-4 weeks.

You must return this medical card to your local citizen service center once you have completed your studies at DTU and before you leave Denmark.

Please note that you are not covered by the Danish National Health Service until you acquire your health insurance card. Non-EU/EEA citizens are recommended to purchase private health insurance in their home country to offer interim coverage until their health insurance card arrives. It is recommended that EU nationals bring their blue EU/EEA insurance cards with them.

Doctor (GP)

International students can access free medical treatment in Denmark thanks to the Danish welfare system. A GP (General Practitioner) will be assigned to you when you acquire your health insurance card. If you need to make an appointment, his or her contact information is printed on your health insurance card; remember to carry the card with you when you go to the doctor.

Specialists

If you need to see a specialist, you must first schedule an appointment with your primary care physician to obtain a referral to the specialist.

Dentist

If you need to see a dentist, you can schedule an appointment with any dentist you want. Keep in mind that dental treatment in Denmark is not free. You will find a list of dentists in the yellow pages under “tandlæger”.

Nordic citizens
Citizens from Nordic countries are automatically entitled to the same medical services as Danish nationals; they do not need additional health insurance.
