Individual research institutions in Norway process PhD applications. As a result, each institution’s requirements, documents, and deadlines for PhD degree applications may differ. Direct applications to the prospective university should also be made.
In Norway, PhD candidates must hold a master’s degree in a suitable field. A similar degree may be allowed — the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education can evaluate your qualifications’ eligibility (NOKUT).
Different research institutions have different application criteria. Always double-check with your potential university.
PhD candidates are typically expected to produce a decent research proposal or project description, as well as fill out the appropriate application forms. Other standard PhD application documents may be required as well. The following are some examples of supplementary supplies that may be required:
- Certified copies of all documents relevant to your educational background
- A funding plan for your studies (for the full 3-4 years of full-time study, plus information about the funding source and type)
- A statement describing any significant scholarly or material resource requirements
- The name of at least one proposed academic supervisor (unless stipulated otherwise)
In Norway, the majority of PhD programs are taught in English. English language test scores will be required of prospective doctorate candidates from non-native English-speaking nations. Different Norwegian research institutions may demand different tests and scores, and the requirements may even differ based on the doctoral program.
It’s possible that some PhD programs will be taught in Norwegian. Non-native Norwegian speakers will also need to submit the results of Norwegian language tests. Depending on the research institution and program of study, different scores are necessary. Even if Norwegian is not the primary language of instruction, it will be valuable in the classroom and in everyday life.
